As we all know, not everyone follows the law. That's why we need Uninsured Motorist insurance.

because even though most (if not all) states require auto insurance, there are still some irresponsible people out there who refuse to buy auto insurance BTW...if you look at your declarations page, you should also see "underinsured motorist" coverage...this is for the people who still drive a 1978 AMC Pacer and only pay for barely enough insurance to get it out of a ditch, but not enough to pay for the repairs to that 2007 Acura MDX they ran into the other day

Because not every state requires insurance. Here in WI Auto insurance is not mandatory by law but "financial responsibility"is required by law. That means that you will be held responsible for any damages you cause out of your own pocket. Not many people can afford to do that. The problem is one of education here in cheeseland. People hear that auto insurance is not mandatory so they don't buy any insurance. Then they get drunk and t-bone a family of five and are upset when they get a judgment against them and lose their drivers license for 20 years (or until they pay up). My home state of Minnesota has mandatory auto insurance and while their rate of uninsured drivers is lower than WI they still have plenty of their own. Many people buy a policy just so they can get their license tabs (they have to show proof of insurance to get them) then they stop paying they policy premiums.

Seriously...because there are to 11; many idiots out on the road who don't abide by the mandatory insurance law (apparently the law applies to everyone BUT them) and drive without it, cause accidents, and then skip town leaving an innocent person broken and p.o'd. What kills me are these same idiots get into accidents and then have the nerve to try to collect for their damages when had they bothered to stay off the road they wouldn't be in this situation to start with. Like this one lady I dealt with today, she has no car insurance, no health insurance, 5 kids and works 2 jobs...had her car not even a month, bought insurance for 1 day so 15;he could drive it off the lot because as she says she can't afford it, gets into an accident & forgets to put her car in PARK before jumping out of it and the car goes crashing into a brick wall and then has the nerve to ask me why I can only settle her bi claim for so much money saying it's not "fair." Gimme a break.

Well, in my area, there 7;re a lot of undocumented, illegals out on the roads. Can't sue them in an accident!

in Texas, for instance, about 1/3 of drivers are uninsured. in other words, you're NUTS if you don't carry UM/UIM coverage. furthermore, most of the INSURED drivers are "under-insured" so it pays to have this coverage.
